École des arts décoratifs Paris

A school that has been home to the creators of contemporary design for over 250 years, a place where students bring beauty and utility to life as they build tomorrow’s world. The École des Arts Décoratifs - PSL - PSL, now spread across several sites, is determined to fulfil its national mission to reinvent the art of living and of inhabiting our time. Sending out roots at different geographic and symbolic levels, it revitalises the very notion of the decorative arts, in close alignment with the issues and challenges facing us when it comes to our earthly home. Every year 800 students are trained at our historical address on 31 Rue d’Ulm in Paris. They study in 10 separate but cross-cutting departments (Art, Interior Architecture, Animation, Graphic Design, Product Design, Textile and Texture Design, Fashion & Accessory Design, Printed Image, Photography/Video and Stage Design), graduating with bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees.

With support from the school’s springboard programme, PROMESSE, designed to prepare students for the working world, these 140 graduates have their sights set on the future: not to fit in with it, but to transform it. Off-campus post-master’s courses provide real-life training in local problems that design can help resolve. The Rural Environment Design programme originately running in Nontron is being replicated in four other areas using a site-specific approach: Mountain Environment Design, Coastal Environment Design, Forest Environment Design and Island Environment Design.

The Artists Working in Schools post-master’s course involves a year’s residence in educational establishments: graduates are fully immersed in the daily life of our youngest generations, transmitting to them the liberating potential of the arts and design. La Renverse is a new type of school, founded in the Paris suburbs in partnership with Ateliers Médicis. Its goal is to open the door to equality and diversity. Young people aged between 18 and 25 living in Seine-Saint-Denis and other nearby areas with a passion or talent for artistic creation spend a year at the school. They are given support to help them develop their artistic potential, from putting together a career plan to going back into education.

EnsadLab is France’s first art and design laboratory. Created in 2007, it trains a new generation of artists and designers using a research-led approach. It offers a practice-based PhD at the intersection of art, design, the humanities and the sciences centring on three cross-cutting research areas: biodesign and new active materials; spatial interfaces and human and non-human interactions, and environment, health and care.

The École des Arts Décoratifs - PSL - PSL is a higher education public institution under the authority of the French Ministry of Culture and partner to ²ÝÁñÂÛ̳ (Paris Sciences & Lettres).

Since 2022 it has supported the Campus d’Excellence de la Mode, des Métiers d’Art et du Design, located in the historic Manufactures des Gobelins in Paris and comprising a unique network of establishments in Ile-de-France as well as institutional partners.
